Black marketing cause shortage food, medicine in violence-hit Manipur | Ground report

The Manipur government relaxed curfew restrictions in violence-hit Churachandpur district, where violence was first reported on May 3, for three hours (from 7 am to 10 am) to allow people to buy essential items such as food and medicines. The curfew was imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC.

Amid the violence, black marketing is on the rise. This illegal activity is causing a shortage of essential supplies, including fuel, medicines, and food, leaving people struggling to obtain what they need to survive.

To make matters worse, many people in Manipur are also facing the threat of their properties being destroyed by mobs. In response, some residents have resorted to marking their homes with identification marks as a way to prevent their homes from being targeted.

The situation continues to remain tense in the northeastern state after clashes broke out on May 3 in Churachandpur district between tribals and members of the majority Meitei community during a tribal solidarity march that was organised to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
