Another explosion on Amritsar’s heritage street near Golden Temple, 2nd in 24 hours

By Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu: Hours after a person was injured in an explosion at Heritage Street near the Golden Temple in Punjab’s Amritsar, another blast was reported on the same spot on Monday morning. The blast occurred near the same spot on Heritage Street near Saragarhi Sarai on the way to the Golden Temple.

The incident happened at around 6.30 am. The police, including police commissioner, and forensic teams have reached the spot and are collecting the samples for examination. No one has been injured and no damage has been reported.

Police are yet to issue an official statement on the blast. The sound of the blast were heard by nearby locals and they also saw smoke in the area after the explosion.

The blast happened as unidentified person hung the explosive substance, bomb, with a thread from Heritage Street parking lot.

Panic gripped the Heritage Street residents near the Golden Temple on Saturday night in which one person sustained injuries. The blast was heard within one-km radius of the Golden Temple and glass facades of some buildings were damaged in an explosion.

The explosion, the cause of which is yet to be known, was reported near an eating joint late on Saturday, police told PTI.

Karandeep Singh, a devotee who was present at the spot, said a few girls travelling in an auto-rickshaw were hit by shards of glass and sustained minor injuries after the explosion. The girls had come from Haryana’s Panchkula to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple, he said.

The Amritsar police said, “A news related to blasts in Amritsar is going viral on social media, the situation is under control. Investigation is on to establish the facts of the incident and there is no need to panic. Urge citizens to maintain peace and harmony, advise all to fact-check before sharing.”

After the blast, DCP Law and Order of Amritsar, Parminder Singh hinted that there was a blast in a chimney and nothing was found from the site.

“But, some pieces were recovered by police from the spot after which a foresnic team was called from Mohali to determine the cause of the explosion,” he said.
