Slain IAS Krishnaiah’s wife wants Anand Mohan back in jail, not to be given ticket to contest polls

By Abdul Basheer: Uma Krishnaiah, the wife of slain IAS officer G Krishnaiah, has demanded that former Bihar MP Anand Mohan must be sent back to jail and that he must not be given a ticket to contest elections.

On Monday, the Supreme Court heard the plea of Uma Krishnaiah, who challenged the premature release of Anand Mohan.

In April 2023, Anand Mohan was released from the Saharsa jail after the state government tweaked the Bihar Prisons Manual 2012, facilitating his release. He was convicted in the 1994 Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah murder case.

Anand Mohan was earlier sentenced to death but the Patna High Court had commuted it to life imprisonment. As per the allegations, IAS officer G Krishnaiah died in 1994 after being attacked by a mob led by Anand Mohan.

Challenging the premature release of Anand Mohan, IAS officer G Krishnaiah’s wife moved the Supreme Court.

Hearing Uma Krishnaiah’s plea, the Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and JK Maheshwari issued notices to the Bihar government, Union government and others. Anand Mohan was directed to respond within two weeks to the petition filed by Uma Krishnaiah.

Responding to this, Uma Krishnaiah said, “We feel happy regarding the decision taken by the Supreme Court.”

“After filing the case, in two weeks, the Supreme Court has responded, which is a good development,” she added.

When asked if it was a setback to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar government, she said, “I don’t think it is a setback to Nitish Kumar. He is not a chief minister because of Anand Mohan.”

WHAT IS THE PETITION?

Uma Krishnaiah’s petition has argued that the amendment made to remission rules is against public policy and the said amendment was based on malafide considerations and for political gains. The petition stated that the Bihar government amended the Bihar Prison Manual 2012 with retrospective effect through amendment dated April 10, 2023, in order to ensure that the convict, Anand Mohan, be granted the benefit of remission.
